The shape of things to come...........

The Douglas SBD Dauntless scout/dive-bomber became forever famous during the Battle of Midway, its’ proud accomplishments etched into United States military history. At the start of WWII, the Dauntless was the Navy and Marines' primary strike aircraft and it maintained this stature through the end of 1942.  The SBD-3 design was updated to the SBD-5 which also played a valuable role in later battles. Three of the SBD-5's remain flyable today with many 3’s and 5’s in air museums.

JMP has taken on the challenge to create the finest all composite warbird kit ever produced. The first two years of the project have resulted in the completion of the fuselage, cowling, canopy frames, clear glass, and stabilizer molds.  Also, laser cutting and the necessary leading edge fiberglass parts for the elevators and rudder are complete. The wing molds are currently underway.

Our model is designed at 30% scale with a wingspan of 150 inches, length of 114 inches, and a height of 34 inches. The wing area is 4300 square inches, with an estimated total model weight of 90 pounds. A 5-cylinder RCS 400cc radial engine will power the SBD.  The 39" x 30" pitch 3-blade flying scale propeller is accurately shaped in profile and diameter, with an exact reproduction of the Hamilton Standard hub.

The photo strip below shows some of the first completed parts and also some shots of the model. Note the left and right arrows for additional photos.  We will update these as molds and parts are completed.

"There was about a twenty knot wind blowing that day but it didn't seem to worry the Firebird. Out of fifty-odd models only five flew."

In 1986, I was privileged to be able to ride with Lt. Col. Wayne Yarolem of the Indiana Air Guard in an F-4 Phantom. This event was chronicled in the December '86 issue of RC Modeler. The person who orchestrated this was Mr. Merv Crowder of Terre Haute, Indiana.

I was recently contacted by Merv, and we discussed creating a website dedicated to the story. Follow this link for the "Ride of His Life" and  some great F-4 video: http://www.joink.com/homes/users/mchowder/

For a person who loves jet aircraft, this is absolutely one of the most exciting events that can occur in one's life. I am pleased to be able to share it.

Sincerely,

Tom Cook

JMP Custom Thermocouple for AMT Engines

The photos below show the JMP Custom Thermocouple.  This thermocouple assembly is designed specifically for AMT engines to replace the stock temperature probe that has long been supplied. The new design cleans up the side of the engine and in many cases makes the close fitting turbine cover an easier fit. Just drill a hole in the turbine bypass and pull the mini plug through to clear the flow path. These assemblies are a K type thermocouple with a machined Inconel mounting base.

Installation:

A ¼” hole is drilled into the turbine engine exhaust nozzle. The approximate position is shown in the photos. Remove the thermocouple mini plug and pull the wire through from the inside of the nozzle into position. The hex nut will hold the assembly in place. Re-install the plug and the installation is complete.

#T-1 has a 12" protective stainless overbraid with a mini thermocouple plug installed. (An EXT-3 extension wire cut to a specific length will be needed in most installations to reach the ECU)

#EXT-3 extension wire with plugs installed can be ordered to a specific length.

       Prices: #T-1: $50.00

                   #EXT-3: $12.00
